History & Geography
History Intent
For all children to have a chronological understanding of how people’s lives from the earliest times to the present day have shaped this nation and how Darlington and Britain have influenced and been influenced by the wider world. A study of key events taught in a chronological order will fire pupils’ imagination of the past, enabling them to progress in their historical thinking and interpretations. Children will make links between different time periods, ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
A range of diverse people from the past and present will provide a stimulus and support exciting topics relating to different times in the past, which will help the children to identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. We will offer meaningful experiences, for all children to help them understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change and what has helped shape their identity today.
Geography Intent
For all children to understand the world's people, places and environments and how and why places are changing. Children will recognise where we live in relation to the rest of the world and have an in depth knowledge of their local environment and the events and influences that have formed it.
We will offer meaningful experiences for all children to inspire and broaden their horizons; identifying inspirational figures along the way. Geography at West Park will also help the children to better imagine, predict and work towards, likely and preferred futures.
