Sport
At West Park Academy we believe in offering every child the opportunity to participate in sport. As well as a variety of excellent units of work focussing on a range of sports and activities, we feel passionately about getting children involved with after school activities.
We participate in the 'Healthy Darlington, eat well, move more, live longer' Gold Package which enables us to access many more opportuities from high quality coaches. We also take part in many inter-school 'Sainsbury's Games' competitions and always try to get a wide range of pupils involved.
Please read our Sports Newsletter for more news on what the children have been involved in throughout 2015-2016.
Football
We have a football coach that comes into school every week to work with the Y5 and 6 children in developing their football skills. From this group of children the football coach chooses who will represent the school on football competitions and tournaments.
Cricket
During the summer months, children get the opportunity to play KwikCricket at lunchtimes.
Cross Country
This year we have been running a cross country on a Thursday evening from 3:30-4:30 pm. Together, we have improved our fitness and stamina and have had fun whilst running around the school and the surrounding area of West Park.
We took part in the Darlington Schools Cross County competition. All the children represented the school and themselves fantastically and the spirit in which everyone supported and encouraged all the participants was tremendous.
We are extremely proud of all the children's efforts. Mathew and Elliott Dummett came within the top 10 in their races and were selected for the Tees Valley event.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics club runs during the Spring term for Years 1 and 2. We explore jumping, balancing and travelling on the floor and apparatus, learning to perform with control and precision.
We also learn the key steps in preparation for local schools gymnastics competitions.
Archery Club (Autumn Term)
West Park Academy are proud of their wide range of sporting activities on offer and it does not get any more extreme than archery. With GNAS (Grand National Archery Society) qualified coaches delivering sessions, the children have the opportunity to take part in an exciting sport which is a rare opportunity for children at this age.
Safety is the number one priority throughout the sessions and children are expected to follow strict procedures and are actively involved in ensuring the safety of each other at all times.
Archery Club runs during the Autumn Term and we have a wide range of equipment, including safety nets in order to run the club using our fantastic school hall. Equipment, as we are sure you can imagine, can be quite costly so West Park Academy do ask for a nominal fee of £10 per course in order to upkeep, replenish and replace equipment.
